WHAT IS SKIN LIGHTENING?
Truth be told, we cannot have a 101 talk about skin lightening without starting from the very beginning. What is skin color? What does skin lightening mean? Melanin is the main reason for which we have a specific color on our skin. melanin is made by the specialized cells, known as melanocytes and melanin is a pigment produced by this type of cells. Obviously enough, the more melanin you have in your skin, the darker your skin color is.
The genetic makeup is the one deciding how much melanin your skin has, but there are some other conditions that have an influence on that. Exposure to specific chemical, hormones, sunlight exposure and various skin conditions are going to change the melanin production in your skin as well. Many of the skin color problems are going to solve themselves, after some time. The less you stay in the sunlight, the more your tan is going to fade out. However, some specific discolorations (we’re talking about the liver spots and age spots) may become permanent and getting rid of them isn’t going to be that easy anymore. |
What is skin lightening anyway?
Skin lightening is in fact a cosmetic treatment that is intended to lower the visibility of skin discolorations, leading to an evener skin. you can use over the counter bleaching creams or get the stronger ones, prescribed by your doctor.
This kind of treatment also includes the category of people that are determined to change their skin complexion altogether, but this process is quite risky. As many bleaching products out there are formulated on mercury, a complex bleaching process like this one may cause a mercury poisoning. Mercury is a toxic agent and may lead to severe kidney conditions, but also to neurological and psychiatric conditions. It’s a dangerous ingredient for the pregnant women that may pass it to their unborn child if using mercury-based skin bleaching products. U.S bans the use of mercury in skin lighteners, but there are products out there, outside the U.S that may still include mercury. |
